How to Save Money on Your Water Bill this Summer

Surprise! Your water bill increased and you have to pay for it by the due date. Homeowners are often surprised with the spike in their water bill, especially during the summer months. For some reason, the summer is one time of the year in South Florida that water gets used the most. Usually, this is due to frequent use of lawn sprinklers and the installation of above ground pools. If you want to save money on your water bill this summer, consider the tips listed below.

  • Fix Leaks – Inspect the drains, showerheads, toilets, and sprinklers in and around your home. If your sinks are dripping water or leaking water from the pipes underneath the sink, you need to get it fixed quickly. Other signs of leaks include rust spots, small puddles around outdoor sprinklers and toilets that run constantly.
  • Inspect the Water Heater – If your water heater is over 10 years old, you should consider replacing it. Carefully check the exterior of the water heater for rust, cracks or water. A leak in a water heater can quickly get larger and sometimes flood the entire first floor of your home. Replacing a water heater requires professional installation so plan ahead so you don’t go without hot water in the shower.
  • Take Shorter Showers – It feels great to take a steaming hot shower after a long day at work. It sure helps the stress melt away, right? You can still de-stress with a hot shower, but you need to limit it to a specific time frame. An easy way to limit your showers is to play music while you are in the shower and make sure you complete your shower by the end of the second song. Usually, two songs are equivalent to a 10-minute shower.
  • Use the Dishwasher – If you have been afraid to use your dishwasher because you think it uses too much water compared to hand washing dishes, you will be surprised to learn it’s actually vice versa. Hand washing dishes uses more water than a dishwasher set on light or gentle cycle. Some dishwashers even have a water saver and power saver option that could help you save on your water bill as well as your electric bill. Save your hands from washing dishes and let your dishwasher do all the work.
