Repairing Your Plumbing After a Flood

Repairing our homes after the onset of a hurricane is a long and tedious process. One of the worst scenarios that could possibly happen to our homes during a hurricane is flooding which is either caused by poor plumbing lines, congested plumbing lines, plumbing lines that have burst and other external factors.

Even though we’ve prepared our homes before the storm, sometimes, the inevitable just seems to happen and here are some of the things you should keep an eye out for just in case it’s already happening in your home:

  1. Clogging of drains

During a hurricane or a flood, floodwater can carry dirt, garbage and other things that can potentially clog drains and even when the water recedes, the residue it brought with it can still be left behind. If you have drains around your house, the best thing to do is check them for clogging using a plunger or even a plumbing snake. However, if you’re concerned about the plumbing going further than what the eye can see, contacting a plumber is always the best option.

  1. Broken fixtures

Exposed fixtures are most likely to become damaged during a flood or hurricane due to the debris. Whatever damages caused by the calamity should be replaced immediately and those that survived should be given close inspection just to make sure that it doesn’t need any repairs of taking care of. Cleaning them in diluted bleach is a great effort to prevent the growth of mold.

  1. Pipe problems

Pipe problems are definitely a top priority (along with gas leaks) after a storm. Debris ad shifting can cause a lot of problems either immediately or gradually which is definitely not something anyone wants to deal with. If pipes are broken, they cannot be immediately identified until after the floods have receded but if puddles are still seen around your pipes even after the floodwaters have gone, then you might want to have your pipes checked right away.

Generally, what you want to do after any flood or storm is to have your entire home checked up for anything that could have been damaged during that time. It also helps to keep an eye open for anything that may seem strange or foreign as it could be a sign of something that needs attention in your home. Waiting until it’s too late can not only be tasking financially but it can also take up so much time and could even cost us our homes.
