Best Tips for Saving Water and Money

How much is your water bill? Homeowners often report that the water bill is the least expensive compared to other household expenses. But, there are other homeowners that cringe at the sight of their water bill. It’s just too expensive! If you are tired of your water bill draining your bank account consider the following water saving tips.

  • Stop pre-rinsing dishes – Instead of using water to pre-rinse dishes just scrape the food off the plates and allow your dishwasher to do the work. Investing in a good quality dishwasher detergent is beneficial for this tip.
  • Fill up your dishwasher – Surprisingly, the dishwasher uses the same amount of water whether you have a small load or large load of dishes. Always make sure you fill the dishwasher to the limit before using it.
  • Store drinking water in the refrigerator – If you use tap water as your main drinking water source you are wasting water. Just think about how many times you let the water run until it gets cool enough for you to drink. That wasted water is running up your bill. Instead, fill water bottles with tap water and place it in the refrigerator on a daily basis.
  • Use appliances to heat water – If you enjoy cooking chances are your recipes will require a cup or two of hot water. Many cooks allow their tap water to run until it becomes hot enough to use. Instead, use a glass measuring cup filled with water and heat it in the microwave.
  • Limit garbage disposal use – Just think about how much water you flush down the disposal every time you use it. Try to limit the use of the garbage disposal so you use less water.
  • Shorten your shower time – A hot shower after a long day is something many of us look forward to. However, it’s when we stay in the shower longer than needed that causes the water bill to increase. Generally, a 15-minute shower uses about 37 gallons of water.
  • Repair leaky faucets – Leaky faucets that drip constantly is wasting water. To test the amount of water it wastes, place a bucket under the leaky faucet and see how much accumulates throughout the day while you are at work or while you are sleeping. You will be surprised to see the amount of water that goes to waste.
  • Turn the water off while brushing – Brushing your teeth for two minutes is the standard rule told to us by dentists. However, it can become costly when we run the water the entire two minutes. Turn the water off while brushing and turn it back on again to rinse your mouth. This is also recommended when shaving.

The tips listed above will help you save water and money. You can choose to follow all of the tips or just implement a few. Either way, you should see a lower water bill when using these tips. Plumbing Fixes for Florida Pipe Lawsuits

Florida home or commercial property owners with properties built before 1975, most likely own property that contains a cast iron plumbing system that has failed or is nearing failure.

Cast iron pipes corrode and deteriorate over time. Mokher Plumbing has the experience to inspect and give you accurate estimates of the damage that needs repair or replacement. Many Florida home and property owners have contacted their insurance company about replacing old piping or repairing damage from broken pipes, only to have the claim denied or underpaid. As a result, lawsuits have been filed. Estimates from professional plumbers are needed so that the property owners can receive compensation.

Pipe deterioration can lead to water damage, water back-ups in the house, clogged or slow drains, leaking sewage, pest infestation. This poses possible health risks to building occupants. Check for these signs that your plumbing system has problems:

  • Drain or toilet backups
  • Slow drains
  • Foul smells (such as a “rotten egg” smell)
  • Roach or rodent infestation
  • Leaks and water damage
  • Gurgling sounds from drains or toilets
  • Water around the floor drain in the basement
  • Raw sewage back up from drains
  • Floor tiles that are broken, cracked, raised or loose
  • Water-stained or discolored carpets or floor tile and grout

Not So Normal Wear and Tear

An estimated 76 million American homes have failed cast iron pipes that need replacement. In Florida, 2.4 million homes have this serious plumbing problem.

Wear and tear is normal in residential pipe systems. Cast iron waste pipes last between 50 and 100 years. However, with defective pipes, cast iron pipes will have to be replaced long before their lifetime is up. Deterioration of cast iron pipes is normal after just 25 years, so homeowners should conduct routine inspections. Mokher Plumbing can do an inspection of your home and advise you of the condition of your pipes.

One of the consequences of plumbing problems is that it can greatly lower a property’s market value. It can also lead to extensive water damages and pollute local aquifers. Many houses built prior to 1975 contain cast iron pipes that are approaching the end of their lifespan.

Protect your property and get an accurate estimate of the cost of damages by getting an estimate from an experienced plumber at Mokher Plumbing. Top 3 Reasons to Install a Water Filtration System

Water is required for showering, cooking and drinking. It is a necessity for everyday life. In today’s world, many people who drink tap water from their faucet are consuming chlorine-treated water. This water also contains other contaminants, chemicals, and harmful bacteria.

Even if you boil your drinking water, the chemicals still remain, although the bacteria usually get killed. The human body is made up of 70% of water. This means water is essential to human life on a daily basis. If you don’t want to expose yourself and your family to chemically treated water, a filtration system is recommended. The following information is the top the reasons to install a water filtration system in your home.

  1. Safer drinking water – Consuming chemical treated water can cause a strain on the liver and kidneys in some people. A filtration system will allow you and your family to have access to fresh and clean drinking water every time. If you currently drink chemical treated water that flows from your faucets at home, chances are you have to drink twice as much to really feel like your thirst has been quenched. If you are thirsty all the time even though you drink more than 8 glasses of water a day, chances are the chemicals in the water are not easy for your body to tolerate.
  2. Improved shower water – Showering with chemical treated water allows your skin to absorb the chemicals and flush them through your bloodstream. If you or your family members have sensitive skin, chemical treated water can cause irritation and discomfort on a daily basis. It can also be the cause of skin conditions flaring up frequently. A water filtration system produces healthy water that helps keep your skin and body healthy.
  3. Prevent gastrointestinal diseases – Tap water often has microscopic organisms. The chemical treated water found in our homes often attempt to destroy the organisms and bacteria. However, sometimes they still survive and people consume the water which leads to gastrointestinal diseases. If you and your family have experienced frequent digestive problems, chances are the water you consume is contaminated. A filtration system removes the microscopic organisms, bacteria, and chemicals that cause issues.

As you can see from the list above investing in a water filtration system provides healthy water for your household. If you are interested in installing a system in your home, contact us today for further assistance.
