5 Best Water Saving Tips

Water costs money! As a homeowner, you have most likely discovered a few ways to save water in order to lower your bill. If you haven’t, you certainly want to begin making changes right away. Do you have a big family? Or, a teenager that likes to take showers for one hour daily? If you answered yes, chances are your household is using more water than necessary. There are a variety of ways to reduce water use in your home. Below are the top 5 ways to save water.

1 – Use Water When Necessary

Dentists recommend brushing your teeth at least twice a day. This means that everyone in your home is using the water to complete this task daily. Are any of them letting the water run while they are scrubbing their teeth? This clean water is flowing directly down the drain without even being touched once. Ask family members to turn off the faucet while they are brushing their teeth and only use it to rinse.

2 – Choose Showers over Baths

If you and your family members are capable of taking short showers, you can actually use less than taking a bath. Short showers use less water than actually filling up the bath tub. If you have young children that prefer to take baths you can purchase smaller tubs made specifically for children that fit inside the standard tub. Fill the smaller tub with water until the child graduates to taking showers.

3 – Use the Dishwasher

Your mother probably told you to never use the dishwasher because it used too much water and electric. These days, dishwashers are energy efficient and only use the amount of water needed per cycle. This means that old fashioned dish washing in the sink actually uses more water compared to dishwashers. Invest in a good quality dishwasher machine to save water, money and time.

4 – Check for Leaks

A leaky faucet can cause more damage to your water bill then you think. If you hear drip, drip, drip coming from your faucets you are wasting water. If you are not sure how much water you are wasting, do a simple test to prove it. Place a large bowl under the leaky faucet for the entire night. When you wake up in the morning you will see how much wasted water accumulated overnight from a simple leak. You just paid for all of that water to go down the drain. Fix leaky faucets as soon as you discover the issue. Most leaky faucet issues can be solved with a quick trip to the hardware store and a DIY project.

5 – Recycle Rain Water

Do you have a beautiful yard or garden? How many times a week do you have to water it? You can save water by recycling rainwater in a bucket. Leave a bucket or two outdoors to collect rain water. Once the bucket is full immediately use it to water your plants and trees. Beware of standing water because mosquitoes can hatch quickly and cause health issues.

These 5 water saving tips are easy to do and will help you save water and money on a monthly basis. Put these tips to the test and begin making changes in your household today. If you suspect you have serious water leaks in your pipes or other areas of your home, contact a professional plumber to schedule an inspection.

Video Camera Plumbing Inspections

Video cameras are helping to take the guesswork out of the scenario for plumbers. In the past plumbers had to use a variety of inspection techniques that often led to misdiagnosis before locating the real problem. It wasn’t the fault of the plumber it was just part of the job. Today, video cameras are saving plumbers, homeowners and business owner’s time and money.

How do video inspections work?

Most pipes and sewer lines are underground making it difficult for plumbers to inspect. Sometimes they are under layers of cement underneath your home’s foundation. When a plumber conducts a video inspection they use a flexible rod that is capable of going into pipes from 2” to 36” in diameter. The flexible rod has a video camera secured to it that allows plumbers to see the pipes in the high-resolution footage. The plumber is capable of determining the condition of the pipes and recommending the exact solution to the problem.

Common Issues Video Inspections Reveal

  • Rusted pipes
  • Broken pipes
  • Leaks
  • Punctured pipes
  • Corroded pipes
  • Grease buildup
  • Misaligned pipes
  • Tree roots interfering with piping
  • Rocks in Pipes

Almost every homeowner has experienced the moment when something valuable has fallen into the sink into an unreachable place. Often this valuable item is a ring or other type of jewelry. Panic immediately sets in and action is taken. Sometimes the surprise of the situation causes homeowners to take a negative action such as turning on the faucet. This only flushes the jewelry further into the pipes. Using a flashlight to locate the item is not even going to help at this point.

Some homeowners who are familiar with plumbing will remove the piping under the sink to try to locate the ring. However, most times it’s too late and the jewelry has already passed this point and entered further into the pipes. This is the perfect time to call the plumber for a video inspection. The rod with a camera installed to it will help locate the jewelry and assist the plumber in retrieving the item.

In addition to this scenario, video inspections are also capable of locating a variety of different issues that might have been overlooked in the past. If your home is experiencing frequent clogs, backups or slow drains contact a plumber today to pinpoint the problem and get it fixed immediately.

Top 5 Tips to Stop Mold from Forming in Your Bathroom

Do you suffer from allergy, respiratory problems or depression? Mold in your bathroom can be the cause. Mold is even known to cause symptoms in those who suffer from asthma. You might see mold growing in your bathroom. However, you don’t see the spores that come off of the mold clusters into the air causing you to inhale toxins. You can prevent mold from forming in your bathroom by following the tips below.

1 – Replace Shower Curtains – Do you have a plastic shower curtain that has mold forming at the bottom of it? Replace it with a fresh new one. Make it a regular habit to replace the shower curtain at the first sign of mildew or mold.

2 – Use a Dehumidifier – Most people know what a humidifier is but don’t realize there are “dehumidifiers” that are equally as useful. To create a dry environment invest in a dehumidifier and place it in your bathroom. Use it during and after a shower.

3 – Fix Plumbing Issues – Have a plumber come to your home to inspect for leaks and other issues that can promote mold growth. Make sure all plumbing issues are fixed and take measures to prevent them in the future.

4 – Open Windows – This tip is obvious but most people rarely open their windows. If you have a window in your bathroom it is an excellent option to help stop mold from forming. Open the window during and/or after you shower to release steam from your bathroom.

5 – Don’t Let Water Sit Around – Almost every family has the one person that leaves their soaking wet towel on the bathroom floor after they shower. This wet towel traps in moisture and leaks water onto the floor creating the perfect environment for mold to grow. Prevent this by explaining to your loved one that their towel is causing mold and bacteria exposure to the entire family. Then provide them with a special place to hang their wet towels so it can dry properly.

Keeping an eye out for leaks, moisture, and messy family members will help you pinpoint the key areas in your home where mold can form. Follow the tips above to prevent growth and always clean up any spills or water throughout the entire house. If you find mold in your house and don’t know the reason why contact a plumber immediately to find out.
