Tips for Preparing Your Plumbing for the Holidays

The holiday season has officially arrived! This means family and friends will be visiting your house for holiday parties and your plumbing will be put through the test. Before the relatives arrive, there are a few things you can do as a homeowner to prepare your plumbing for what is to come during the holiday season. Continue reading below for helpful tips that will keep your plumbing running in tip-top shape throughout the season.

  • Invest in thin toilet paper – Plumbing is sensitive and if your toilet is already prone to get clogged due to the use of too much toilet paper, you need to be prepared for guests. An excellent way to prevent clogs during the holidays is to purchase thin quality toilet paper. It flushes and breaks apart easily preventing clogs even if more than a normal amount is used.
  • Clear the clogs in drains – Check the drains in your sinks and tubs for clogs. If the water is not flowing down the drain easily and quickly or if you hear a gurgling sound you need to unclog the drain. A simple plunge should clear out small clogs. However, serious clog issues should be handled by a professional plumber.
  • Check the water heater– The water heater often hides safely behind a closet door and is forgotten about until there are issues with the hot water. Don’t take the chance of having hot water issues during the holidays. Check the date on your water heater to make sure it’s not too old. If your water heater is more than 7 years old have a professional plumber inspect it to see if part replacements are needed. Don’t wait to have a house full of guests from out of town that have to suffer through cold showers to call the plumber. Make sure you take care of the issue before your family and guests arrive.
  • Clean the garbage disposal – Holidays involve a lot of cooking. If you have family and friends visiting that enjoy cooking your garbage disposal will definitely be used frequently. Start your holiday season by pouring one cup of white vinegar down the garbage disposal, allow it to sit for ten minutes then flush with hot water from the tap for one minute. This will clean debris, residue, oil, grease and more from your garbage disposal.
