Shower or Baths: Which One Saves the Most Water

Homeowners across the United States often wonder how to save water and money when it comes to their water bill. Showers and baths have long debated among homeowners. Sometimes it’s just a preference whether you like to shower or soak in the tub. Either way, you need to find a way to save water. The information below will help you decide if a shower or bath is best.

The Truth about Baths

Filling the tub with warm water and bubbles relaxing and reading a book sounds good, right? But, did you know when you take a bath it uses 35 to 50 gallons of water. This shocking amount of water not might seem like a big deal, but if you multiply it by how many times a month you and others in the household take a bath, you are racking up quite a lot of water usage and expenses.

Showers

The average 10-minute shower uses about 25 gallons of water. While this is less water than a bath, it’s still a lot of water that goes down the drain. If you are interested in conserving water and lowering your bill, consider the helpful tips below.

Tips to Using Less Water

  • Take a bath as a treat to yourself on occasion
  • Bring the radio in the bathroom and narrow your shower to one or two songs at the most
  • Put a bucket in the shower to catch all the cold water while you wait for the hot water to come out. Use the bucket of water to wash your floors or water plants
  • Install a low-flow showerhead
  • Turn off the water. This might sound crazy but if you spend a long time in the shower waiting for your hair conditioner to soak in for 10 minutes, turn the water off while you wait.
  • Brush your teeth in the shower. This reduces the water you would use at the sink.
  • Apply face masks and cleansers before entering the shower. Some face masks and cleansers require you to leave it on for 10-15 minutes before washing it with warm water. Allow the mask to soak in before you turn the water on, then wash it off as soon as you get in the shower.

Saving water is essential to keeping your water bill down. Some cities within the United States are in a drought from time to time and require residents to limit their water usage. The tips above will help you meet the requirements and save money.
