How to Avoid Water Pressure Loss in Your Shower

by | Apr 23, 2018 | Bathroom

What happened? Almost every homeowner has experienced loss of water pressure in the shower. It’s that moment when you suddenly realize there isn’t enough pressure to wash the soap and shampoo off your body so it takes you a long time as the water slowly drizzles out of the shower head. This situation usually spins homeowners into a frantic state of mind wondering if there is something seriously wrong. Before you investigate further, consider the following.

First look around and see if you have evidence of hard water. This is usually obvious because your shower tiles, shower curtain, and fixtures have water spots. Hard water often causes buildup inside shower heads that cause loss of water pressure.

Turn off the water and remove the shower head completely. Take a look at the shower head and inside the piping and connection area to see if you find grime, crust, and debris stuck inside. If so, this could be the main cause of the water pressure loss.

You can easily clean the shower head by soaking it fully submerged in a bucket of cleaning solution. A natural solution involves white vinegar mixed with water. The vinegar naturally removes the bacteria and debris buildup caused by the hard water.

If you have some stubborn debris that is stuck on and difficult to remove, use an old toothbrush to scrub and remove it fully. Once the showerhead is completely clean, re-install it and test it by turning on the shower. If the pressure improves you can breathe a sigh of relief because you fixed the issue. If not, you need to contact a plumber immediately for further assistance.

If hard water is an issue in your house and it’s the cause of water pressure loss you can prevent this from happening by investing in a water softening system. This type of system prevents the buildup of mineral deposits and water pressure loss. It is highly recommended for households that have hard water.
