When Should I Replace my Old Plumbing?

Our homes are our prized possessions. We don’t usually want to think that it gets old and needs repairs. Especially pipes that are hidden behind walls and other areas. If you have had your home for a long time you might need to replace old plumbing. The following signs listed below will alert you that it’s time to make some improvements to your plumbing.

  • Discolored water – Have you looked at the color of your tap water lately? You can check the color by pouring tap water directly from the faucet into a clear glass. Take a white sheet of paper and place it behind the glass. If the water in the glass has a tint that is brown or slightly red toned, you have rusty pipes. These hidden rusty pipes can leak or bust at any moment. They are also exposing you and your family to rusty water in the shower and in your drinking water.
  • Smelly water – As a South Florida resident you know there are times the water stinks briefly when there are issues. This is usually around the time when the local news reports advise residents to boil water for safety reasons. If your water has an odor there is a sign of bacteria. If the issue isn’t from your local water supply, the bacteria could be in your pipes. This means you are showering and drinking this water which could lead to illness.
  • Water damage – Do you have a water stain on your ceiling, walls or flooring? Do you smell a bad odor or notice mildew growing in your home? These are all signs of water damage. This is usually a result of leaky pipes. The water has obviously spread and leaked into the walls and flooring of your home. This type of damage requires replacement of old plumbing to solve the issue. It also might require mold removal and damage repair to the surrounding area.
  • How old is your plumbing? – You should have records of when the plumbing was updated. If you don’t know when your plumbing was installed, updated or replaced, you need to find out. One of the best ways to find out the condition of your plumbing is to speak to a professional plumber.

Do you notice any of the signs listed above in your home? If so, you need to seek the advice of a professional. You can get help today by contacting us for further assistance.

Spring Plumbing Tips

South Florida has sunshine and warm weather almost all year long. It’s difficult to tell when the seasons change in our area of the world. March generally marks that Spring is on its way and it’s time to get prepared. The rest of the country might be dusting the snow off their car, but we are already experiencing warm temperatures that allow us to swim in our pools and start our gardening routine. The following tips will help you get prepared and possibly save some money too.

  • Check for leaks – Inspect your faucets, showerheads, and pipes under the sinks. Do your faucets or showerheads drip? Do you see water under your sink? Do you smell a bad odor under the sink? If you answered yes to any of these questions you have a water leak. It’s essential that you get it repaired immediately to avoid any further issues. Remember a small water leak can get bigger quickly causing costly damage to your home.
  • Check the toilets – Do you hear your toilet constantly running? You might think it’s no big deal as long as it’s not overflowing but you actually have a water leak. This type of water leak can cause your water bill to skyrocket. You can easily test your toilet to confirm there is a leak. Place a few drops of food coloring into the tank and wait up to 30 minutes. Do not use the toilet during this time. Then, check to see if you notice the food coloring in the toilet bowl area. If you see color in the bowl, you definitely have a leak that needs to be fixed.
  • Install drain strainers – Drain strainers are affordable little devices that cover the drain. They catch hair and other types of things that clog your pipes. They are easy to install and empty. These small little save you lots of money.
  • Prepare your pool – South Florida residents who have pools at their homes often have outdoor showers for convenience. These outdoor showers need to be taken care of by a professional. They can leak and cause mold and bacteria to build up. Also, the pool itself needs to have superior plumbing in order to work properly and provide clean water for swimming.

Spring is just around the corner! Make sure you are prepared by doing the tips listed above. These helpful money-saving tips will help keep you stay on budget. If you are having issues with the plumbing in your home, contact us today for further assistance.

Why Does the Dishwasher Not Fill with Water?

Homeowners don’t usually realize how important their dishwasher is until it doesn’t work properly anymore. Dirty dishes after a wash cycle is the most common sign your dishwasher is not filling with water. If you are having issues with your dishwasher, consider the following issues.

Check the Hoses

There are hoses that attach to your dishwasher. Sometimes they get kinked and cause the water to flow properly. It’s similar to a garden hose. If the hose is twisted or folded in any way, it blocks the water from flowing through it. Check the hoses for your dishwasher and straighten them out to see if it solves the issue.

Door Switch Issues

The closed-door switch activates your dishwasher to start working when you start a cycle. If the door switch is broken the dishwasher won’t know the door is closed and it won’t allow the water to flow properly.

Damaged Float

The float inside the dishwasher is responsible for recognizing and measuring when the proper amount of water has been used. It is responsible for stopping the water flow. If the float gets stuck due to debris from dishes it can prevent it from doing its job properly. In other situations, the float switch doesn’t work, and it needs replacing.

Electrical Outlet Problems

If your dishwasher isn’t working properly check the electrical outlet. Sometimes power surges can cause outlets to stop working. Also, check the breaker switch to assure that it is turned on for the area where your dishwasher is located.

Contact a Professional

Dishwashers are quite complicated machines that require a plumber at times. If you have discovered your dishes aren’t getting clean due to water issues, you need to contact a plumber immediately. Avoid trying to troubleshoot the issue. Dishwashers are a combination of complex electrical components and plumbing. It is essential you discuss any issues with a plumber.

If you continue using your dishwasher while the water is not working properly you can cause more harm to the washer. Other issues could arise as well. It’s important that as soon as you notice dirty dishes that you inquire further about the cause. Most of the time it’s a simple solution such as checking the hoses for kinks, other times it can be a serious issue that needs professional attention.
