Important Plumbing Elements to Check After a Hurricane

Hurricanes can have a lot of major effects on our homes, neighborhood, and community. Aside from the emotional and physical stressors that can arise from a natural calamity- financial stressors can also come into play especially when it comes to the repairs that were caused by the natural occurrence.

As much as we would like to prepare for the worst, after a storm, there are also a lot of things that we need to take into account when it comes to maintaining a fully functioning home. Downed lines, trees that have been uprooted from the storm, damaged roofs, flooded streets and other factors can contribute to the slow onset of major issues that can damage our homes, especially our plumbing systems. So now that the storm has passed, what should we do now?

  1. Set up an inspection of your sewer lines

Although it doesn’t seem like the hurricane made any difference to lines located in the ground, storms can actually cause grounds to change and shift. This shifting of the land can cause potential problems with your sewers lines such as detachments or others which may be noticed when you flush your toilet. Another indication of a problem with your sewer lines is the backwashing of sinks, toilets or tubs and even the onset of foul odors which may occur around your drains that could spread throughout your home.

Setting an appointment with your local plumber is the first thing you should do once the initial stressors have settled down and you can begin to make the necessary maintenance of your home.

Also, make sure to double check your water lines and sump pumps.

  1. Inspect your gas lines

Inspecting your gas lines is something that you can do on your own and is definitely something you should do as soon as possible. The high winds and strong precipitation brought upon by the storm, including flying debris, can interfere with gas lines and eventually cause huge problems at home.

Some things to keep an eye on are: the smell of rotten eggs, soft hissing noises emitted by your gas line and of course, holes in your lines. If you notice these things, make sure to contact your gas company right away!

These simple bits of advice will bring you a long way and will save you the hassle of spending hundreds of dollars in maintenance fees. Always keep your family safe whether there’s a storm or not and make sure your home is always in tip-top shape! Repairing Your Plumbing After a Flood

Repairing our homes after the onset of a hurricane is a long and tedious process. One of the worst scenarios that could possibly happen to our homes during a hurricane is flooding which is either caused by poor plumbing lines, congested plumbing lines, plumbing lines that have burst and other external factors.

Even though we’ve prepared our homes before the storm, sometimes, the inevitable just seems to happen and here are some of the things you should keep an eye out for just in case it’s already happening in your home:

  1. Clogging of drains

During a hurricane or a flood, floodwater can carry dirt, garbage and other things that can potentially clog drains and even when the water recedes, the residue it brought with it can still be left behind. If you have drains around your house, the best thing to do is check them for clogging using a plunger or even a plumbing snake. However, if you’re concerned about the plumbing going further than what the eye can see, contacting a plumber is always the best option.

  1. Broken fixtures

Exposed fixtures are most likely to become damaged during a flood or hurricane due to the debris. Whatever damages caused by the calamity should be replaced immediately and those that survived should be given close inspection just to make sure that it doesn’t need any repairs of taking care of. Cleaning them in diluted bleach is a great effort to prevent the growth of mold.

  1. Pipe problems

Pipe problems are definitely a top priority (along with gas leaks) after a storm. Debris ad shifting can cause a lot of problems either immediately or gradually which is definitely not something anyone wants to deal with. If pipes are broken, they cannot be immediately identified until after the floods have receded but if puddles are still seen around your pipes even after the floodwaters have gone, then you might want to have your pipes checked right away.

Generally, what you want to do after any flood or storm is to have your entire home checked up for anything that could have been damaged during that time. It also helps to keep an eye open for anything that may seem strange or foreign as it could be a sign of something that needs attention in your home. Waiting until it’s too late can not only be tasking financially but it can also take up so much time and could even cost us our homes.

When Should You Call for Pipe Repair?

Pipe maintenance is one of the best preventive exercises you can practice at home if you don’t want to spend too much on repairs and utility expenses. The fall season is slowly approaching and therefore, pipe maintenance should be on the top of our list. While recognizing faults and signs of defects in pipes is not as impossible as we may think, there is a huge majority of people who have difficulty recognizing them- this is because sometimes it’s happening under our feet, with little to no evident clues.

Severe damages to your plumbing system may lead to high expenses on water consumption caused by leaks, water damage restoration services, and other high plumbing costs. As difficult as it may seem, there are actually some things that you can keep an eye on at home to recognize if it’s time for you to get your pipes checked:

  1. Dirty water – Each home is equipped with a water treatment system whether it be water filtering or softening. During the onset of murky water, despite having a water filtering system, a professional should be called immediately before putting your loved ones at risk.
  2. Rust spots – Rust spots in odd places are something that we should always be on the lookout for. Spots of rust are usually an indicator that your pipes are old and should be scheduled for a replacement.
  3. Unusually cracks and holes – Any visible cracks or holes in your pipes should be given immediate attention. This is common among older pipes and should be addressed as soon as the problem is identified.
  4. Corroded pipes – Corroded pipes and old and unhealthy pipes and should be replaced immediately before it’s too late. These can be seen in pipes located outside of your house or in basements.
  5. Low Water Pressure – Low pressures in water make showering and other tasks extremely difficult. If you are experiencing this at home, it is most likely a sign of your pipes failing and should be attended to immediately.

These are just a few but early signs of a possible plumbing problem inside your homes. If you are noticing these signs where you live, it is best to have them checked as early as now to avoid any further damage. Always keep in mind that prevention is better than the cure so if you don’t want to spend thousands of dollars in repairs, call and make an appointment today!
