Money Saving Water Conservation Tips for Floridians

Floridians now understand the importance of water conservation. Similarly, California has made some big changes the Sunshine State can learn from. Both states suffer from droughts. Current maximum flow rates for urinals, residential and kitchen faucets, capping out at a usage of 2.2 gallons per minute (GPM), potentially saving nearly 100 billion gallons per year.

It is recommended to contact a plumber as soon as you notice leaks. Even a slow drip from your showerhead can quickly add up to wasted water and dollars on your water bill. If the dripping persists, call an Mokher Plumbing to inspect the suspected problem.

There are many plumbing fixtures that can be installed by the homeowner or by a professional plumber. These plumbing fixtures can help you save hundreds of dollars per year:

High Efficiency Toilet (HET)

Replacing your old toilet, pre-2006, to a newer model is one of the best ways to conserve water. Newer toilets consumes about 3.5 gallons of water per flush instead of 7 gallons per flush in older toilets. A high-efficiency toilet sits around 1.3 GPF. Choose brands with the WaterSense label as they undergo testing for maximum performance and water conservation. Keep in mind that less water does not mean a lesser flush.

Performance Showerheads

Performance showerheads reduce water down to about 1.75 GPM.  The difference may not seem substantial at first, but it adds up over time and will be most obvious when you see a smaller water bill each month.

Water-Saving Faucets

When it comes to faucets, less water does not necessarily mean a less-powerful product. Water-saving faucets can help you drop your water consumption from 2.2 GPM to 1.5 GPM.

Shower Flow-Regulator

If you are not ready to change your current showerhead, consider a shower flow regulator. That allows you to receive the benefits of lower water consumption without a complete upgrade of your shower’s fixtures. A shower flow-regulator lets you slow water to a trickle while lathering up or shampooing while taking a shower.

Dual Flush Toilets

While the name implies more water will be used, the dual flush toilet offers two different flushes, a half, full or a flush that you can customize. This will help you from flushing more water than needed.

Florida Leads in Water Efficiency

There is no current legislation regarding plumbing fixtures in the State of Florida, but the Sunshine State does lead the South in water efficiency. Plumbing professionals believe that the use of water-efficient plumbing technologies have contributed to the increased efficiency. In addition to plumbing fixture upgrades, Floridians can practice these simple conservation tips at home:

  • Lather up hands in soap before turning on the water.
  • Turn off the water while brushing their teeth.
  • Take shorter showers.

Plumbing Fixes for Florida Pipe Lawsuits

Florida home or commercial property owners with properties built before 1975, most likely own property that contains a cast iron plumbing system that has failed or is nearing failure.

Cast iron pipes corrode and deteriorate over time. Mokher Plumbing has the experience to inspect and give you accurate estimates of the damage that needs repair or replacement. Many Florida home and property owners have contacted their insurance company about replacing old piping or repairing damage from broken pipes, only to have the claim denied or underpaid. As a result, lawsuits have been filed. Estimates from professional plumbers are needed so that the property owners can receive compensation.

Pipe deterioration can lead to water damage, water back-ups in the house, clogged or slow drains, leaking sewage, pest infestation. This poses possible health risks to building occupants. Check for these signs that your plumbing system has problems:

  • Drain or toilet backups
  • Slow drains
  • Foul smells (such as a “rotten egg” smell)
  • Roach or rodent infestation
  • Leaks and water damage
  • Gurgling sounds from drains or toilets
  • Water around the floor drain in the basement
  • Raw sewage back up from drains
  • Floor tiles that are broken, cracked, raised or loose
  • Water-stained or discolored carpets or floor tile and grout

Not So Normal Wear and Tear

An estimated 76 million American homes have failed cast iron pipes that need replacement. In Florida, 2.4 million homes have this serious plumbing problem.

Wear and tear is normal in residential pipe systems. Cast iron waste pipes last between 50 and 100 years. However, with defective pipes, cast iron pipes will have to be replaced long before their lifetime is up. Deterioration of cast iron pipes is normal after just 25 years, so homeowners should conduct routine inspections. Mokher Plumbing can do an inspection of your home and advise you of the condition of your pipes.

One of the consequences of plumbing problems is that it can greatly lower a property’s market value. It can also lead to extensive water damages and pollute local aquifers. Many houses built prior to 1975 contain cast iron pipes that are approaching the end of their lifespan.

Protect your property and get an accurate estimate of the cost of damages by getting an estimate from an experienced plumber at Mokher Plumbing. Our plumbers can give you recommendations for services upon inspection of your home. Contact me personally, Chip Mokher at Mokher Plumbing today to get a quote at 305-446-8266

Why You Need a Professional Plumber

Are you a DIY guru that enjoys fixing things in the house? If so, you probably are really good at tackling difficult projects. Surely, you have already experienced replacing showerheads, fixing small leaks in the sink and unclogging a toilet. However, did you know a professional plumber could be your right-hand man when it comes to the plumbing in your house? Most homeowner’s contact a plumber once everything has gone wrong and it’s beyond repairable by a DIY project.

If this has happened to you and you felt completely embarrassed when a professional plumber arrived to see the mess you made, don’t worry, you are not alone. Many homeowners try to save money by doing their own plumbing projects, but they often end up making the issue worse which leads to an expensive bill later.

Professional plumbers can work with you to keep your home plumbing running at it’s best. Yes. You are probably great at replacing a small part on the faucet to fix a small leak, but you need to know the right time to contact a professional plumber, which is usually when a rusty or broken pipe is involved.

You need a professional to make sure the plumbing is installed correctly and the water is flowing through the pipes at the right force and speed. You will be surprised how a clogged pipe or small leak can run up the water bill without you noticing.

Many homeowners attempt to install water heaters in their home as a DIY project. While some homeowners are successful, most end up calling a plumber for further assistance. Some homeowners even report that they didn’t realize there was an electrical component to the water heater and forgot to turn off the breaker switch. This is a dangerous scenario since water and electricity don’t mix well and often causes electrical shock, fire or worse.

You also need a professional plumber to alert you to upcoming issues that could arise in the future. Plumbers often arrive at your home to fix one issue and upon further inspection find another issue attached to the situation. A professional will explain the problem and encourage you to get it fixed within a specific time frame to prevent further damage or issues.
